Abstract:

We design structured electromagnetic fields in form of surface plasmon polariton vortices and follow their evolution with sub-optical cycle nanofemto space-time resolution by nonlinear photoelectron emission microscopy [1]. The plasmonic fields with designed geometrical charge evolve by spin-orbit interaction of light to form plasmonic vortices with vectorial topological spin textures that wrap Poincaré Stokes parameter polarization sphere [2]. The design of surface plasmon polariton coupling structures defines the orbital angular momentum, and in turn integer or half-integer winding of the topological charge corresponding to skyrmion or meron (half-skyrmion) spin textures [3,4]. Nonlinear photoemission electron microscopy [1,4,5] records movies of plasmonic vortex fields with sub-diffraction limited (~30 nm) spatial resolution as they propagate at the local speed of light. The ability to structure and image vectorial electromagnetic fields opens novel applications to explore and interact with the topological properties of matter, light and dark [2,6].
