Abstract
The first image of the shadow around the M87 supermassive black hole was reported in 2019. This result garnered great interest in the public because it was the first time to actually observe the general relativity effect on the light surrounding a black hole. The measured size of the shadow resulting from the bending of the light into the black hole, exactly matched the predictions, and is a direct measure of the central mass. Taiwan is one of the original partners in the Event Horizon Telescope project, and our efforts span some twenty years in developing radio astronomy on island. In this talk, we will discuss the underlying challenges for Taiwan to compete in the frontiers of this field.
